  28. This is not to defend anyone against your criticism but, I'd put it that way:

  30. To hardware design there is more than "just the chips", it's the archictecture
  31. as a whole and the concept behind it. "Amigaish hardware" for me has never
  32. been 'cool custom chips' in the first place. (I am neither hardware-hacker nor
  33. coder and would not understand so much, anyways  ;) But it is the efficient
  34. integration of functions needed for the OS within the hardware AND tightly
  35. related low-level software controlling it.

  37. Thus the Amiga became a computer where ten years back in time the terms
  38. 'plug'n play' and 'easy-computing' had their justification.
  39.  
  40. Amiga's custom chipsets have been OK for their time - there were no other
  41. sophisticated AND achieveable solutions. Nowadays there is a whole new world
  42. of special solutions to special problems at far more accessible prices.
  43.  
  44. It will not be easy, but viable, to find even more abstract ways to "speak to
  45. the hardware" through low-level entities of any future AmigaOS, consequently
  46. delivering interfaces to virtually all the ever-renewing and -improving
  47. off-the-shelf components from third parties.

  49. Hence, the "Amigaish hardware" you mentioned would rather be an 'amigaish way
  50. of using any suitable hardware'.

  52. I think it is this one should keep in mind as the true advantage Amiga, through
  53. its hard- and software conception, still has before the Clones.
